History Comes Alive – Wonder and Awe of Spring Hill Cemetery Park and Arboretum

Discover Charleston’s Rich History on a self-guided walk through the beautiful Cemetery Grounds and Arboretum where you can enjoy magnificent views and interact along the way with
- 6 Reenactors telling the stories of historical Charleston:
- Anna Johnson Gates, WV’s First Women Legislator – portrayed by Carrie Kirk
- Andrew Donnelly, early settler, salt producer – portrayed by Andrew Hart
- Carolyn Gentry, screenwriter and filmmaker – portrayed by Ariana Kincaid
- William Davis, African American educator – portrayed by Jerome Hairston
- Mordecai Levi, 1st Brick Road Maker, Engineer – portrayed by Rob James
- Fannie Cobb Carter, African American educator – portrayed by Kristy Lyles
- Larry Rowe author of ‘Virginia Slavery and King Salt in Booker T. Washington’s Boyhood Home’
- Craik-Patton House, Headquarters of National Society Colonial Dames of America, WV
- Participate in a commemorative tree planting with the Sons of the American Revolution at 3pm
-J. Q. Dickenson Salt Company, Learn the History of Salt Making in the Kanawha Valley
-Colonel Henry Hewitt Wood, who built a still standing House in Kanawha City in 1830.
- Learn about the park and arboretums Flora and Fauna, that includes 4 WV Champion Trees from:
- Andy Sheetz, WV Division of Forestry
- Handlan Chapter of Brooks Bird Club
- Shanda King, State Apiarist
- Future Generations University – Maple Syrup Tastings
- WVSU Extension Services
- Music by Spencer Elliott, and refreshments from the Mountain Juice Co.
- Leashed dogs are welcome.
- K.R.T Trolley rides should be available from downtown and on-site parking are available.

History Comes Alive at Spring Hill Cemetery Park and Arboretum – a FestivFALL Event

Come celebrate Charleston’s rich history with the Friends of Spring Hill Cemetery Park and Arboretum on a choice of 2 self-guided walks.

One is wholly on asphalt, with easy grades, one is on grass with, generally easy travel, but rougher underfoot. Both routes will have printed guide packed with information about graves and trees you will pass on the route.Both routes will pass all the re-enactors, and other vendors.

  • Hear the stories of prominent early Charleston residents told by reenactors and or their descendants.

  • Enjoy magnificent views up and down the Kanawha Valley.

  • Take in the parks charm, monuments and flora and fauna with members of Brooks Bird Club and representatives of the Friends of Spring Hill Park and Arboretum.

  • Interactive Children's Activities by WV Division of Forestry and Future Generations University

  • Music

  • Dogs on leash welcome.

  • Trolley Rides from Downtown and on-site Parking.

  • Attendance is free.

Third Saturday Saunter'

Discover History, Birds, and Trees. - The monthly guided walks will introduce you to different areas of the Cemetery. Discover the flora and fauna and stories behind people buried in the Cemetery. Binoculars for bird watching, and shoes suitable for walking on grass are advised. Walk will be up to 1 1/4 miles and will usually involve some elevation.

Annual Celtic Calling Gathering

Annual Celtic Calling Gathering

As part of the annual Celtic Calling Gathering, a 5k Run/2K Walk will be held in Spring Hill Cemetery Park and Arboretum on March 5th starting at 9 a.m. Kilts are not required, but they are welcome. It will be a great chance to get some exercise, learn some history and walk dogs (who are welcome).

Check in starts at 8 a.m. A Mountain State food truck will be on hand at 8:30 along with bagpipers. Cost is $25 for those who pre-register before the week of the race and $30 for those who register the week of the race. No onsite registration will be available and on line registration, which is required, will close on March 3d. On line registration can be made at the Celtic Calling/Friends of Spring Hill Cemetery link from runsignup.com.

All participants will receive a 3 inch race logo sticker. Twenty coffee mugs with an embossed Celtic Calling logo will be presented to winners in various categories. Groups are encouraged to participate and there will be group awards.

FestaFall

During FestaFall, on Sunday October 10, 2021, the Friends of Spring Hill Cemetery Park will produce historical re-enactments depicting persons of note who are interred in the park. Actors will portray the persons and give a history of each. Friends presents this event every other year. This years program will include Moses Frankenberger, Rachel Grant Thompkins, William Davis, Caroline Gentry, Judge James Brown, William Johnston and Fannie Lewis. The presentations will start at 1:00 p.m. and continue until 4:00 p.m. Transportation to the park will be provided leaving from Taylor Books on Capitol Street and the Carriage Trail, every 30 minutes.
